DIY: Teeth whitening at home

There are some things in the world that are universally considered as unattractive and a set of yellow decaying teeth is one of them. I can’t really recommend anything for the decaying part except for… I don’t know, maybe brush your teeth and go to the dentist. But for people suffering from stained and yellow teeth, I have just the solution for you!

Here’s a great, easy and surefire homemade remedy for stained teeth. I myself do this and I highly recommend it. First off, you are going to need the following:

1. Baking soda – get the baking soda that can be used for baking and not just for cleaning. You don’t want to poison yourself.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide – yes, the agua oxinada, the stuff you use to clean your wounds. Don’t be scared! It’s safe. In fact, the back of my bottle even suggests that it can be used as a mouthwash (if you want to try it, the recommended ratio is one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts water).

3. Spoon – I recommend that you use a teaspoon as it is easier to stir with and it provides just the right amount when scooping the baking soda.

4. A small empty container – to combine your ingredients in. Make sure that the container is not too small because you might have difficulty stirring everything together.

Caution: Do not use this if you have open sores or burns in your mouth. It doesn’t really hurt but it will leave a white discoloration on your tongue and gums. Also, do not use this for more than once a week. If you have had any sort of restoration, such as porcelain veneers, I do not recommend this teeth whitener as it may scratch the surface of your restorations rendering it more susceptible to staining.

So, let’s get started! Follow these easy steps on how to get whiter teeth:

1. Scoop a teaspoonful of the baking soda onto your container. Don’t use too much! You really don’t need much more than that.

2. Squeeze in a few drops of the hydrogen peroxide onto the baking soda. You may notice that it will turn a slight yellow-green color and that’s normal. You want to keep stirring in hydrogen peroxide until it reaches a slightly thick consistency much like that of runny toothpaste’s.

3. Set the mixture aside and brush your teeth with regular toothpaste. This is optional but you may want to do it to freshen up your breath.

4. After brushing, rinse and now brush your teeth with the mixture. It is going to taste a little bit salty but nothing too horrible. Do not use this on your tongue! Brush your teeth as you would with regular toothpaste.

5. Do not swallow the mixture! Spit and rinse.

And you’re done! I suggest you do this before going to bed. Do this once a week and you will start to see results in about a month. With continued use, your teeth will become super bright and stain-free! Good luck!

  8. Your DIY teeth whitener idea is great! Baking soda is actually a very popular homemade solution for whitening teeth. I, on the other hand, just use strawberries, which is one of the most common natural teeth whitening solutions. The fruit is rich in malic acid that can help whiten the teeth. You just have to cut the strawberry in half, and gently rub it on your teeth. Also, what keeps me using this method is that, aside from helping make the teeth whiter, it also tastes good!
